In Costa Rica, the place where a fatal traffic accident has taken place is marked with what we could call a tombsign: a square that frames a heart and a halo. Painted in the same color that the rest of road signs, the first time I saw it I could not decipher its meaning. When I learned what it was, I could not make up my mind to whether the factual anonymity of its presence –at least in terms of color and medium- was deliberate to soften its tragic meaning or just the result of bad design.
Are signs supposed to target emotions?
